Sugar cookies for every occasion...

There hasn't been lots of time for fun recently with the end of the semester creeping nearer, but we have made some excuses for partying...

Last weekend was definitely an exciting one in Lexington! UK made it into the Final Four, and although we avoided the craziness of downtown, we had a quiet little party with some good food.
I made buffalo chicken dip (which sadly I hit the bowl on the door of my car when I was getting out which shattered half of it and left a good portion in the driveway...but we enjoyed the rest of it :) Evelyn made awesome Spinach dip and I made some special final four UK cookies.
I dyed the dough blue...
And then decorated with some fun UK stuff...
It turned out to be an unfortunate game, but luckily it was a fun tournament, and they have one more year to get it right!

With sugar cookies on the brain, I decided to make more this week for a presentation I had to do for my OB class. I was teaching about truths vs myths about types of induction, and got my group to interact, by feeding them and writing funny stuff on them. Can you guess which ones really work?
Sugar cookies might be the most versatile dessert ever...the shapes, color, etc options are endless! Soft chewy cookies with an amazing cream cheese frosting, DELICIOUS!
I got this recipe from my friend Beth a couple of years ago, and I really think it might be the best one ever! I love it. With her permission, I share it here :)
Cookie:
2 c shortening
2 c sugar
2 eggs
2 t baking soda
1/2 t salt
3/4 c milk
3/4 c corn starch (I think this is the secret because I haven't seen other recipes like this)
5-1/2 c flour

Mix shortening, sugar and eggs. Add the rest of the ingredients a few at a time, mixing well. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (can be overnight, etc) so it is firm enough to roll out. Divide in half (if you made the whole recipe) and roll out on a floured surface to desired thickness.

Bake 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes. Pull out when lightly golden brown (too long will make them crunchy). Cool and frost.

Frosting:
1/2 c butter
8 oz cream cheese
powdered sugar (sorry, I don't have a measurement), just to the consistency you want (probably a couple of cups)
2 t vanilla
If too thin, add more sugar, if too thick, add small amounts of water at a time.

Decorate and enjoy :) Wilton gel food coloring is the best way to color!

  2. Pretty sure that I'm in love with the OB Class cookies...how many sugar cookies can say "Nipple Stim", or "Sex" and be found outside of an adult store?! Taryn, you are AWESOME!!
