SUP in San Diego

We are quickly adjusting to our new lives that no longer involve school and studying. And...because I am still unemployed (a very frustrating thing...but more on that later), I am able to complete all necessary "chores" during the week while Grant is at work. So...we kind of treat the weekends like mini vacations in which we explore our new area and do things we've been looking forward to learning! This past Saturday was no exception. We headed down to Liberty Station Park.
We had 3 items on our agenda for the day... SUP (stand up paddle), which we had not yet tried but have been wanting to, bike shopping, and a delicious dinner. While checking out REI's selection of bikes and different locations in the area we saw that they had a stand up paddle demonstration at the park and signed up. This gave us a short lesson, rental and time out on the water to play around for awhile. It was a perfect first experience! The weather was perfect, our instructor was excellent and I now feel comfortable to go out whenever I want.
Juan snapped a few shots of us at the end of our time out on the bay...

We were even good enough that neither of us got wet! On an ordinary day I would have loved to take a swim, however, we planned on spending the rest of the day away from home so I didn't want to be salty and wet the rest of the day!
For the rest of the afternoon we went bike shopping. I have a pretty old cruiser right now but we are ready to upgrade to something we can go farther distances on. I would like to be able to ride for fun and fitness...didn't buy anything but got a good idea of what I want.

Finally, we headed downtown San Diego and walked around Harbor Dr for awhile. Grant in front of a giant aircraft carrier, he thought it was pretty cool which I guess is good since there's a chance he could live on one for a few months one day!
And that delicious dinner we had planned...we knew just the place to make it happen! Some extremely generous friends gave us a giftcard for graduation and we have been excited to use it ever since. We had only been to Ruth's Chris once before, but it was one of the most amazing meals of our lives, so needless to say we were ready for round 2!
Grant got the filet with shrimp on top and I got the original filet.
We had crabbed stuffed mushrooms as an appetizer and potatoes au gratin and asparagus on the side. It was all amazing!
We had a view of the harbor from our seats, and this is the sun setting between the ferns on the patio.
We had such a fun Saturday and can't wait to see what else we find to do in this amazing new city/area that we live in.

  1. What an amazing day! It's nice we left so the sun could come out again. :) The bay you went SUP in is so pretty. Can't wait to visit again and give it a try.
