Miramar Air Show

Last weekend we took a little break from car shows and went to an air show instead :) Miramar is the military air base just south of us. Apparently Camp Pendleton has the helicopters and Miramar is home of all the fixed wing planes. There were planes from all over at this show and it was actually pretty cool (made even better by the fact that it was free...except for our ridiculously priced lunch. I was ok paying extra for lunch because I saw that Chipotle was a sponsor and had a booth there, but when I got there all they had were t-shirts and a photo booth, so disappointed! Oh well, our chicken strips were pretty delicious :)
We drove mullet to the air field and I think my favorite part of the day was the drive in. Traffic was slow once we got on base, but there were 6 planes flying extremely low and close together, and with the top down on the car, we had the perfect seats. Wish the rest of the show had been that perfect.
Before it started we walked around and looked at all the planes on display.
When the show began, things went up in smoke. There were "bombs" on the ground that exploded after a fly-by to simulate what these planes were capable of.

Grant spent a lot of time behind the camera and actually got some pretty good shots for the planes being so far away and flying crazy fast.
This plane was insane...reminded me of a stingray (apparently living by the ocean has made me compare the shape of everything to sea creatures).
The Oracle was insane...this guy's talent reached beyond the limits of his old plane, so they built him a new one to do new tricks and stunts. He was pretty amazing and I got nervous for him (and us) a few times, although I know he knew what he was doing.
And of course, the Blue Angels....Grant saw them last summer at an air show while he was in Rhode Island at ODS, but I'm pretty sure this was my first time seeing them. I was trying to figure out what the "purpose" of all of these planes, etc were, and Grant said that the Blue Angels (and also Top Gun) are the Navy's most powerful recruiting tools :)
The weather has remained amazing and since Grant is on call this weekend, maybe we can remain at home and enjoy some beach time. We have however been enjoying the amazing October sunsets that have been occurring each night this week!
