A wave of string art

It's been a long time since I've "crafted." In Oceanside I knew we'd only be there a year so didn't really bother making anything for our home, and then I think I was just too busy and/or tired. For some reason, I've been in a crafty mood, but since the little guy takes up a huge majority of my day, I've tried to find projects that don't take long, are simple and not frustrating (my perfectionism can get in the way sometimes). One "challenge" of doing a project here is making sure we get the right materials which is a little harder when I can't read a single thing on the label! We are painting our dining chairs (reveal in a future post) and I wanted a sea glass color. Unfortunately there is no home depot and I couldn't find anywhere that custom mixes paint, so I found these two colors and mixed my own :)
Tammy gave me the great idea of using the kitchen scale to make sure the paint mixture is correct (much easier than making sure you scrape out every last bit of paint from the measuring cup, etc), and then I had the idea to use a syringe to draw up the paint, which worked amazingly!!! I recommend it if you ever are mixing colors.
We put shelves in our closet when we moved in and had 3 extra little pieces of wood that we cut off the end of them. They were sitting around and somehow I had the vision for a 3 piece string art to hang in Rowan's room....and thus the project begun.
I love how the color turned out! (not to mention this Japanese paint brush was awesome!)
Then I found this string and nails at the 100 yen store (this store is awesome!) So much better than the dollar stores in the states.
Grant helped draw the waves on the wood, and then I went to town with the hammer and nails :)
We did most of them inside one night, but needed to buy some more nails so I finished the next afternoon. Rowan was getting antsy, so we decided to go outside and hang out while I finished. He loves being outside, and it was finally comfortable enough to sit out in the shade. It's still really hot, but I know that better weather is around the corner!

(got a little distracted taking pics of this cute kid for awhile :)
And here is the finished product. The string was pretty fun to put on. I had no idea what I was really doing, but it seemed to just kind of work. I knew I wanted it generally going in the direction to look like the water was moving with the wave, but other than that, I just strung away.
In all, this project only cost me about $4, and I think will be a cute addition to Rowan's wall. I hope to be completely down with his nursery in the next week or 2. It's nothing elaborate but has been fun to finally be able to decorate a room for him.
