Fishing fun

After Grant's experience deep sea fishing last year, he jumped at the chance to head out into the East China Sea and do some more. A few people from his clinic chartered a fishing boat out of a harbor south of here and he left at 3:30 am to make sure they got in as much fishing as possible!
They provide all the equipment you need...he just had to wear clothes to cover up from the sun (which he did a good job of except forgetting to put sunscreen on his hands-which his mom saw on facetime the next day and asked if he had spilled acid on them! haha) Glad it was only the tops of his hands though :)

One fun thing about heading out before sunrise is getting to see this beautiful view over the water!

They drove out slow so they could catch as the went...

...and catch they did! Look at the color of this water! So amazing. Maybe when Rowan gets a little bigger we can all go out as a family. I can't imagine 12 hours on a boat in the middle of the ocean with him right now (and honestly I'll probably feel the same in a year :) Maybe I can just go out with Grant some time and leave the little guy at home.
This was a durado (mahi mahi)...he caught some of these off San Diego last year. The rule in order to keep and not throw back a durado was that it had to be as long as your arm! Thought it was impressive that they caught so many fish that long.
TJ and Grant in their awesome fishing outfits...
Their clinic director goes out almost every weekend, so I see some more trips in their future. Grant already wants to go out in Novemeber (apparently a new season). We have a lot of fish to eat before then!
His first tuna of the trip. They paid the deck hand to filet the fish for them (I told Grant this was a must...I didn't want my kitchen looking like a butchers shop) and Grant ate chunks of fish as he cut it up. Doesn't get much fresher than that. And although I like sushi, that's a bit too much for me, so we seared it the next night and it was delicious!
At one point, they both got a bite at the same time and upon realing them in, it was almost comical to compare the fish. Luckily, TJ caught several other huge ones as well :)
And here are the spoils from the day! I can't even imagine how many hundreds/thousands of dollars worth of fish they caught. It was definitely worth the money he paid to go on the trip. Now I just need to get creative with my fish recipes so we don't get sick of eating it :)
Grant came home pretty beat and tired, had a good night sleep, and then enjoyed a fish feast the next night with good friends :)
