A little over a year ago I did a blog post about my "regular run" in Oceanside and what I loved about it. One of the things I was most excited about with the location of our house here in Okinawa was the long coastline to run and walk along.
I was so glad I put my Bob (jogging stroller) in our express shipment. Between having a baby, packing up, moving, etc. it has been way too long since I've been regularly exercising. I feel like we are still working on getting fully settled, but I have managed to settle into a somewhat normal exercise routine (although it still needs a lot of work). I cannot believe how hard running is now! I am so grateful that I stayed in as good of shape as I did during pregnancy otherwise I can't even imagine how much harder it would be. Recovering from baby, the extra 10 lbs I still have, and the hot and humid climate make it intensely hard to run, so I'm setting small goals for myself!
As I mentioned before, Rowan is not a fan of his carseat, so I had to really plan the timing of my runs so I could get him to fall asleep before we leave. It is not fun to run with a screaming baby for 30-60 minutes. A peaceful sleeping little guy to stare at is much better!!
The first few days I would just jump on the path behind our house and go either north or south and just see what was there. The second day, I encountered this stretch of path between two paved parts...a stroller on unpacked sand was definitely a workout...but fun to have an unexpected obstacle. We avoid this part of the path now though ;)
Here are a few shots along the path...
If only the air wasn't so insanely sticky! (my underwear, sports bra and tank top were entirely soaked with sweat at the end of my workout the other day), not one dry spot.
Part of the path dead ended at this fun little beach. I can't wait to go back and look for shells, it was an awesome little patch of sand.
About a week ago we finally perfected our loop, it's 3.85 miles and can be lengthened or shortened if needed. And I love that it goes along this gorgeous beach. There is a path right along the sand and then another through a park area with workout equipment...
...and just for fun, I did some more stroller pushing on the sand from this ramp to the one on the other side. Good arm workout...
One of the things we found hilarious when studying for our driving test when we got here was that there are "no parking" signs all over the island. However, the law is written to say that there is no parking or stopping EXCEPT for a short time if buying a soda or ice cream. Being new to the island, we thought this was so funny and had no idea what they were talking about. Now we know. There are soda vending machines ALL over and these cute little ice cream cone signs with people just sitting on the sidewalk selling ice cream out of a cart.
And in the middle of last week I made an amazing discovery! Rowan is such a happy baby no matter where I stick him except his carseat. Since the Bob seat lays pretty flat I decided he was big enough to try the stroller without the carseat. The picture speaks for itself...
He was a content and awake little guy for about the first 5 minutes and then peacefully drifted off to sleep. It was amazing! I love that I can now go out any time between feedings and he will be happy and not scream! I don't get to stare at his cute face looking up at me but the "window" in the top of the shade still provides a pretty cute view ;)
It is pretty awesome that my regular run has been and will continue to be along the beach...I feel so blessed to be able to run and then to be able to run in such a gorgeous place is just icing on the cake. I still can't actually run my entire run loop without walking, so my goal is to be able to do that in 2 weeks, wish me luck!
Good luck, T! The views are amazing and Rowan is still such a cutie! Good job getting back into a workout routine. You're awesome. And that driving law is hilarious!
ReplyDeleteGood luck Taryn! I know you will be where you want to in no time at all.
