Tonight was Grant's white coat ceremony for the dental school. It started at 5:3o and was held at the Memorial Hall on campus. At this ceremony they were all presented with their "white coats" and told about the responsibility of being a
healthcare provider, etc. They did a great job keeping it short (talked for about 35 mins and did coats for the next 25). It sort of felt like graduation as they called each person by name, said what school they graduated from and then they walked across the stage an
d put on their coats. Luckily he picked a school with a class of 57 or it could have been unnecesarily long. The pic on the right is before the ceremony in front of the Memorial Hall. Also recognized was Mr. Kim Bryan, an associate dean in the college who will be leaving to join his wife in Florida. He has made the application process a pleasant one for us, gave us a tour of the school when we went out last summer, remembers everyone and I mean everyone by name, knows their hometown, spouse, life story, etc and has been amazing to have been associated with. Everyone will miss him but I am glad that we got to know him through the application and admission processes at UK. It wasn't in the too distant past when Grant would call and talk to "Mr. Kim Bryan" to check on the status of his application, etc. Goodbye and good luck Kim!
Grant walking up to get his coat... and then the Dean and a doctor helping him put it on."Grant Layton, Brigham Young University." It was amazing to hear how many people were from BYU. It seemed like there were as many as there were from UK (and there really might be!) Other people were probably wondering what the deal with BYU students is... I guess they're just awesome!
Nate, Travis and Grant after the ceremony dawning their "doctor jackets." (yes, Travis really does have a mustache...Beth you need to come home and regulate! or the guys need to stop making bets about grades regarding facial hair!)
And in case they were feeling too much like real dentists already in their coats, the reality that we are all still very poor dental students sunk in when Nate hopped on the back of the scooter as their form of transportation :)

I love the pic of you two together. I heard you were sick and not feeling so hot! Hope you are feeling better now. I think both Jeff and I had the same thing. Yucky!
ReplyDeleteSO is he graduated and on to his practice, or is there more school? I'm, confused, sorry I don't know the details of a dental education!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Grant! Wish you luck as you continue with your classes!
