"Navy wife"

Well, it's official. Today Grant became an officer in the US Navy. It was supposed to take place 2 months ago, but because there have been so many people wanting the dental and medical scholarships, we had to wait until October 1. I was VERY hesitant when we first started talking about Grant joining the Navy, but after lots of research, talking to people in it, and prayer, we decided that it was a great decision and are so excited for the journey ahead.

Through the scholarship we are awarded a signing bonus, monthly allowance and full tuition, supplies, books, etc. everything paid by the Navy. We felt that it was a good decision to be able to finish dental school completely debt free. In return for the payment during school, Grant will work as a dentist in the Navy for 4 years after he is done. If he decides to specialize they will pay him to go to school and he is not even required to pay those years back. We most likely will have options as to where we want to live (Italy and San Diego are sounding like good options right now). And, he for sure has a job for 4 years, or longer if he decides to stay in longer than he is required to, and can learn and "mess up" without the danger or fear of malpractice. All in all, we're excited about what's to come. It was sort of a scary step but we both feel great about the decision. Congrats Grant :)

  1. Yeah! I am so happy for you. Scared, but happy that it is finally falling into place. Debt free is definitely tempting...

  2. Congratulations! We have known several dentists that went through this and enjoyed it a lot. The debt free is just a great deal, you will earn it though I'm sure.

  4. I think you guys are so smart. My really good friend's husband is a dentist and they have so much debt! It's hard to crawl out of that hole. And the opportunity to travel- sounds so fun.

  7. So is it weird that I think the title of "Navy Wife" sounds kinda sexy? :) Sounds like you guys did your research and I really happy for you and your plans. You should push for San Diego when that happens so I can see you every time I go visit! Who needs Italy?

  9. How interesting... we're considering doing the same thing with the Marines! Kelly has been thinking about law school for a long time and it would be similiar to what you guys are doing. We have a lot to do to get organized. Kelly has to take the LSAT in December, and then we go on from there. But we may end up on the east coast within the next few years! :)

  10. Hey Grant,

David Seaman here. Good to see you haven't completely fallen off the face of the earth.
    Congrats on becoming a "seaman".
The Navy is not a bad gig. My dad did for 20 years and I would have done if not for the foot. My dad had his jaw broken by a Navy dentist extracting a wisdom tooth that did not need to come out. But like your wife said in the post you can get away with that kind of stuff being a Navy Dentist as you can ground a Pilot for not letting you pull the tooth.

    Congrats again...
