Arctic Blast

As probably all of you have heard, or are experiencing, much of the country has been hit with an "arctic chill." I forgot what below 0* F feels like, and in case you haven't felt it recently (or ever), be assured that it is NOT pleasant. Just think about how much warmer 68 degrees is than freezing...and that's how much colder than freezing we are now. They canceled school on Friday here because of the cold (I guess a kid got frostbite on Thursday after waiting at the bus stop too long). I thought the school cancellations were a bit much, but in reality, it really is that miserable. Here are a few tips that I have found helpful in staying warm during this terrible time -Melly, I'm sorry that much of your year feels the way that this week has for me :(

-Jersey sheets! Love them. It's like sleeping in a super soft T-shirt...they don't give you that terrible freezing feeling when you hit the sheets at night
-Put your towel in the dryer while you shower and yell to someone else in the house to bring it to you when you're ready to get out
-Wear leggings under your pants (yes, I really wore leggings under my tweed trousers (I don't usually use that word to refer to pants but I guess I've been watching too much What Not to Wear since it came to mind)
-Stand directly in front of the fireplace until it feels like the back of your pants are going to catch on fire
-Rice pack- you know those weird little things full of rice that you stick in the microwave. Yep :) 2 minutes in the microwave and it's warmth for an hour
-Walk around the mall to save money on heating at the house
-Fleece pajama pants under your skirt until you get to church and have to take them off to look presentable

These are just a few tricks I've used in the last week to keep from dying. So far they're working. And as you can tell, it's been a fairly uneventful week as this is the best thing I had to blog about! From now on Canada...you can keep your cold! I don't want it anymore.

  1. AHHH I feel so validated that everyone feels a smidgen of my pain. Other ideas-warm soups and slippers.

  2. I guess I won't whine about our 42 degree low this week! I used to do all those things you listed when I was in the lovely state of Idaho. My roommates and I also found that dance parties work wonders to warm a body up! I want pictures of that one, k? :)

I love the idea of the warm towel -- I'm going to try that one. I figure this cold snap is preparing me for my upcoming visit to the Great White North where I fully expect to freeze my face off. At Inaugural time tomorrow the wind chill will be 19 degrees.
