That smell

Our sense of smell is one of the most incredible senses that we possess. Smells can take us back years to experiences we've had, places we've been, people we've been with. It amazes me how vivid these recollections can be, just by smelling something familiar.

I picked Grant up from school yesterday. The second he sat down next to me, a familiar smell entered my nostrils. "You smell like dead people" I commented. Yesterday marked the start of Grant's second semester of dental school and anatomy lab has begun. This may sound repulsive to many, but for some reason this is a smell that brings back good memories of college. No, it's not really the smell of dead people, it is all the chemicals used to preserve them, but nonetheless, it reminds me of cadavers. I am writing my personal statement for my nursing school application right now and trying to convey my love of the human body. It fascinates me. I am intrigued by the magnificent creation that it is, how everything in our bodies work together, etc. I love it.

For some reason, I have a nose for the smell of these preservation chemicals though. I would walk through the halls at BYU and could point out people that had been in the lab that day, just based on their smell. For this reason, I am very grateful that I am not pregnant during this semester as I hear that smells are often heightened, and I, for some reason, am already quite sensitive to this smell. As much as it brings back fond memories, I do not enjoy the smell particularly. I am grateful that Grant now has scrubs that he can just throw in the laundry when he gets home.

Well I guess that's enough stalling, I better get back to the essay writing!

  3. I too have very fond memories of anatomy lab and that wonderful smell. Yuck! We had one cadaver that smelled like Krispy Kreme Donuts and it just hasn't been the same since to pick up one of those delicate donuts.
