Decade in review

Seeing as how we are the end of a decade, I decided it would be fun to compile a few monumental moments from the last 10 years. A lot has changed since Y2K and I will do my best to briefly and accurately recount at least some of it. I'm sure it will end up being a much bigger project than I realize, but I am trying to electronically journal more of my life and felt like this would be a good way to get started.

This is more for me than anyone so do not feel obligated to look at the whole thing...it's a long one :)
2000
-Said farewell to a lot of friends who graduated and created strong friendships with the friends still at home (who I still love to this day)
-Ended my soccer career as I "retired" from the Davis Revolution, the competitive team I had been on since I was 10.
-Started my Senior year of high school (my favorite year of high school) and played in my last season of field hockey- miss having that shinguard tan, not really, and legs that look good in a short skirt :)
Meanwhile, Grant was a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving in Pocatello, Idaho, and the surrounding areas, from 1999-2001.
-Rang in the New Year, 2001, performing my first "nursing procedure" repairing Lauren's fingernail that was torn off. Little did I know this would be the beginning of a career.
2001
-Snowboard trips to Tahoe on long weekends. Thank you Lauren for having the Durango, made it possible for lots of us to go everywhere :)
-Our final Bogus Ball- DHS dances are coming to an end-Was admitted to BYU, to start in Fall of 2001. Also admitted to about 5 UC schools and still chose BYU.
-The Fab Five (Lauren, Erica, Anna, me, and Kristen)- We did pretty much everything together this year- including an awesome photo shoot :)
-Final high school lacrosse season and tournament in San Diego, loved the sport, loved the people!
-Senior Ball- My date was Will (a sort of boyfriend at the time). We had a lot of fun with a bunch of friends. The dance was at the Hyatt in Downtown Sacramento, and we went back to Lauren's afterwards. My final high school dance.-Powder puff! Scored the winning, and only, touchdowns for the seniors! Back in the day when I could outrun anyone. I've lost some speed and have now married a guy who is faster than me :(-Graduation- We did it! Grad party at Kristen's house, graduation at UCD and then Grad Night at Emerson. It was a fun 24 hours.-Grant comes home from his mission in August and goes back to Western Kentucky University.
-A last night in Davis before leaving for BYU. I cried as we saw the "Welcome to Utah" sign, but little did I know, I would grow quite fond of the place after a little while.
-I realize Utah isn't so terrible and start making friends in the dorms. 5th Floor T Hall!
-September 2001- (9/11) Erica calls and wakes me up telling me to turn on the TV. There had been a terrorist attack in New York. It took the rest of the day to realize the magnitude of what had happened. There was a devotional and school was canceled for the afternoon.
-Intrigued by the fact that I live in the snow. Realized that I had never really seen big flakes of snow fall from the sky (I know that sounds weird), but I thought it was really cool at the beginning.-New Year's Eve- San Francisco! Watched the fireworks from the patio outside Cheesecake Factory
2002
-Start taking advantage of the fact that I live in the state with "Greatest Snow on Earth" printed on the license plate. We are 15 minutes from a ski resort, and glad it wasn't farther, since we drove with the windows down and my board and Jenny's skis hanging out the miata windows. So fun!
-The Olympics come to town. I get a week off of school and get to attend the torch running through Provo and a medal ceremony. Macy Gray performed (my last choice of concert, but I was out of town for all the good ones). We stayed up all night, lined up outside the mall for free tickets, in the middle of winter.
-Kristen, Lauren, and Lindsay come to visit- We spend a long weekend together and visit Sundance and Temple Square-Played on the BYU club lacrosse team. Met some awesome friends and got to play a game I love.
-My side of my dorm room! As you can see, I loved to collage and decorate.
-Moved out of the dorms and home for the summer.
-Grant moved to Utah (we still didn't know each other at this point) and moved into an apartment where he would soon be roommates with one of my friends from freshman year. He started work at Family First Federal Credit Union.
-Went to San Francisco for my 19th birthday. Went to a comedy club downtown and had some fun on the beaches near the Golden Gate.
-Jenny and Courtney came to visit!
-My cousin Rick got married on Catalina Island, so our family spent a few days there.
-Worked at Nugget Market, a small grocery store in Davis, where I worked with lots of fun people and enjoyed my job for the most part. Spent the summer hanging out with high school and work friends.
-Back to BYU- move in to my first off campus apartment, south of campus, super ghetto, but lots of fun. I lived across the street at Jenny's apt for a majority of the time too :)
-My first friend gets married! ahhh...aren't we too young? Married at the Salt Lake temple and reception in Idaho Falls.
-Grant and I meet!!! He comes over to our apartment for breakfast and to watch conference in October. He's a friend of a friend and thought that I liked his roommate. There was no immediate connection but he thought we (the girls) were fun, and made a point to continue to hang out with us.
-Halloween- The first time we really hang out. Went to a dance at UVSC.
-Coached Orem High School lacrosse with my friends Melly and Megan. So much fun!
-Camping in the canyon- Grant sends this photo home to his family and they ask who the girl is that acts like she likes him :) I was just a big flirt and didn't think much of it at this point. -Grant and I had our first kiss a week or so before I went home for Thanksgiving.
-I went to San Diego for Christmas (like always) and then home over new Year's. Grant and I talked on Christmas day, and it was at times like these that I realized I liked him; however, due to boy drama at home, I would come back to Provo distant and telling him we were nothing but friends.
-Celebrating New Year's Eve in SF, yet again, with Anna, Rachel and company.
2003
-Utah snow this year was NOT good. We decided to pack up the mustang and drive to Northstar at Tahoe. I had a friend who worked there and was able to hook us up with some lift tickets. We left at midnight on Sunday night (Monday morning), drove the 8-9 hours through the night, snowboarded all day Monday, and left that day around 5 to head back home as we had work and school on Tuesday. I have never been so tired!
-Finished out my sophomore year of college and declared my major as exercise science.
-Jenny and I got immunized and went to HAWAII for Spring semester.
-By the time I came home from Hawaii, Grant and I both knew we wanted to be together (ok, Grant knew this long before this time, but I had finally caught up with him). He had decided it was time to sell the mustang and came to visit for my birthday at home. I had finally let my parents in on the fact that we liked each other, and they bought him a plane ticket to come to Tahoe with us for a week, to avoid me wanting to go back to Utah.
-Junior year of college started and I moved into a nice condo, close to campus, with my friend Andrea. We loved the space and had a great time living there. Grant moved across the street to The Brittany Apts (not so nice) and spent the majority of his time at our place.
-By fall we were talking marriage, but decided not to rush things (why start now?)
-We took a trip to San Diego, spent time with my grandparents, I showed Grant around, etc. The 2nd night we were there, went to Souplantation with Grandma and Grandpa Rose, had a great time, but when we got home my Grandma was complaining of a severe headache. She started sounding delirious so we took her to the hospital and found that she had a stroke. It was too severe to operate so we left a day later and she was on comfort care in the hospital for a day. Something told me to take a pic of the 4 of us at dinner that night, but I did not, and still regret that today.
-The next weekend I flew down for my Grandma's funeral.
-Grant comes home for Thanksgiving with me, asks permission from my dad at the gym, and pops the question on Thanksgiving day! (More on this story for a Memory Monday)
2004
-Took engagement pictures and made wedding plans.
-My mom and Grant's mom both came out to go dress shopping with me.
-And in May, we got MARRIED!
-Grant talked me in to buying our first scooter-yellow of course. It treated us well for several years (except for the few falls I took on it).-In December, I graduated from BYU with a BS in Exercise Science.
-Enjoyed our first Christmas together in San Diego with my family.
2005
-We went to Disneyland with my family for a 3-day weekend. It rained almost the whole time, but we didn't care. The lines were short and we got to ride everything (except Space Mountain-one of my favorites-that was closed)
-On the way home from California, we stopped in Vegas to buy our first pet, Ish, a veiled chameleon.
-I got a job for Glenwood Intermountain Properties as the Assistant Manager at Raintree Commons. I worked crazy long weeks during parts of the year, but I enjoyed it for the most part and continued to work there throughout our stay in Provo.
-I walked in April graduation
-And Grant had knee surgery in May. It was a simple scope, but he bruised like crazy! Probably because he pretty much went on with life as normal. I of course was freaked out and made him call the doctor to make sure nothing was wrong.
-Holly graduated from high school and had been accepted to BYU.
-Moved into a new apartment with a washer and dryer! We lived right below our friends Jenny and Sean and Tim and Tricia moved into the building next to us later that summer.
-Went to Vegas for the weekend with Mat and Jen. My first time there!
-Tim and Tricia get married and move into our apartment complex and ward.-Spent some time in California that summer.
-I had played intramural soccer with the same girls every year (Team Quick) and this season my knee was having serious issues. I had been in a scooter accident and hurt my knee a few months previous and further injured it playing soccer that season. I decided to go to the doctor finally and learned that I had torn my ACL and would need surgery (yes, I am wearing shorts in this picture). Spent awhile in a brace and several weeks in physical therapy, but eventually got back to normal.
-This was the first Christmas in my life that I spent away from my family. We stayed in Utah, and Grant's parents came to Provo for the week. We hosted a fun get together and celebrated Christmas at our home in the morning (where Grant decorated our tree with the bras my mom bought to put in my stocking), went to his grandparents' for gifts and then dinner at his aunt and uncle's with a bunch of family.
2006
-Our chameleon Ish was "lost" from my parents yard the summer previous, so for Valentine's Day, I cleaned out the cage and bought Grant a new chameleon, Wan Lopez.
-Hosted Holly's 19th b-day party, her first b-day away from home.
-Moved yet again, to a bigger and better place. Two bedrooms! This is where we stayed for our next 2 years in Provo. We loved the friends we made while living there and really made that apt our own, painting the walls, acquiring furniture, etc.
-Bought our first car together. We had been driving a 1990 Golf from my grandparents prior to this time. We kept it as a second car but enjoyed the newness of our 2003 Protege5.
-Took my first cake decorating class with Jenny- started my fascination and love for the art
-Our first nephew, Gavin, was born. We bought him this sweet BYU beanie.-Continued our tradition of going to see the lights at Temple Square during Christmas time.
-We received the infamous green apple Kitchen Aid mixer this Christmas! Grant with his "you tricked me" face (thinking we got the silver one, and VERY excited it was in fact the green one)
2007
-My friend Melly got married and hired me to make her wedding cake. It was my first chance to challenge myself and use my new cake decorating skills. It turned out great and gave me some confidence in this area.
-I got a job (in addition to working at Raintree) doing medical transcription for IHC. This turned out to be a great decision, even though it meant that I worked 60 hr/wk for about a year. This job allowed me to travel more and I was able to keep this job when we moved to Kentucky.
-Got to go home in May for Mother's Day, Whole Earth Festival, and Karleigh's senior ball. A very fun trip and perpetuated my love for my family and my fascination with Davis.
-Grant started thinking about dental school applications and went to San Diego for a week to shadow a family friend down there. I flew in and met him for the weekend and then drove home together.
-I went to visit Jenny, Sean, and Scott in Virginia Beach, who were selling security there. We had some fun beach time and then I flew to Kentucky to meet Grant and his parents. We toured both University of Kentucky and University of Louisville, so Grant could talk personally with the admissions people and to see which school and city we would prefer should he be accepted. Visited Churchill Downs and got to watch some races from some very expensive boxes.
-At the end of August, Grant interviewed at University of Louisville and then drove back to Utah with Scott and Ron.
-Two weeks later, he was flown back to Kentucky for an interview at University of Kentucky. He chatted with the PA school as I was thinking about applying.
-At this time, I also quit as the manager at Raintree and went back to BYU for a semester to finish up some prereqs (like O-chem and micro lab) for PA school.
-Coolest Halloween costumes thus far... thanks Scott!
-Dec 1 I get up and check Grant's email to see if the dental schools had emailed anything out, and sure enough, there was an acceptance from UK! This was our first choice school and were thrilled to be accepted.
-Christmas we drove down to SD again, but my mom got really sick this year and they were not able to come down, so we spent a few days down there, celebrated Christmas Eve with the extended family, and then drove all night to get home and spent Christmas day in Davis (for the second time in my entire life!)

-Had a 4 of the fab 5 reunion...sad that it's so hard to get us all together. If certain people would stop leaving the country, it would really help! :) 2008
-Started the year out right with a trip to Point Reyes National Seashore.
-Trip to New York City! Saw Wicked, The Late Show, were on TV at the Today Show, walked central park, tried tons of restaurants, did some good shopping, and so much more!
-Flew to Kentucky, knowing we were moving here, to look for houses. Yes, this is the house we bought, and yes it looks WAY different now :) -Somehow in here, I found time to do my second wedding cake, for a girl I worked with at Raintree. The second one was so much easier, because I had done it before.
-Ran our first half marathon, a big accomplishment!
-Between all the trips, I did find time to volunteer in the emergency room at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. It was during this time that I decided nursing was the career for me.
-Grant graduates! It was a long time coming but it was very exciting, especially knowing he had gotten into dental school and had worked really hard to get where he was.-We drove across the country in our Penske and moved into our new house!
-Spent the entire summer remodeling like crazy. Turned our house into something new and totally different. A lot of sweat and love went into this place!
-We did; however, get a week at the beach, a rest from the work and to give Grant a break before school started.
-Scott and Trisha get married and we fly out for the wedding just days after Grant starts school.
-Grant starts school and the White Coat ceremony makes him feel and look official!-Grant decides to join the Navy and is sworn in.
-I took my first trip to Washington DC to go to Melly's baby shower and to see the sights of our nations's capital. I'm not a huge history person, but was still intrigued by everything.-Spent Thanksgiving in Lexington with some great friends! It definitely eased the blow of not being able to go home and be with family.
-Christmas we were able to go to San Diego again and spent what would be Joan's last Christmas with her.
2009
-Crazy ice storm left us freezing, without power for a day, and broke a bunch of tree branches.
-Met Andrea in Utah for an amazing snowboarding trip!
-Go to San Diego, but miss Joan and her funeral by a few days. Get to spend some good time with both my parents. My nursing school admission letter comes and Grant writes THIS blog post telling me I got in.
-Ran our second half marathon and finished 15 minutes faster than the first one. So fun to train with friends and Grant.
-Finish the house remodel with the completion of the master bath. Our enthusiasm was much lower than the summer before so knew we just needed to get it done.-Spent time in California. Camping in Carpinteria and then some fun at home.
-Ron and Tamara leave us in Kentucky and move to Arizona.
-Spent the fall with Grant working hard in school and me enjoying my last semester before I started school.
-We hosted our first Thanksgiving dinner.
-And celebrated Christmas in our home in Kentucky!
-We finished out the year and decade in Gilbert, Arizona with Grant's entire immediate family!

Wow, that was quite the post, but it was a good journaling project. It's fun to look back at the past 10 years and see how much we have accomplished. It is crazy to think how fast it all goes by! I'm so grateful to have an amazing husband who makes me want to spend several more decades with him.
