I decided the best way to express my love and appreciation for my mom was to list some memories I have with/of her. Of course these do not encompass even a measurable portion of the memories with m: mom, but I tried to have a little variety. In no particular order, here they are:-Lots of great reminiscing, cleaning, juicing, working, playing, etc. a few weeks ago in San Diego.
-When I started crying on the way home from the hairdresser the morning of Senior Ball, she was quick to comfort me while we made a quick stop at Rite-Aid, picked up some bobby pins and a bottle of hairspray. She saved the day. My only regret was the $50 spent on my terrible updo!
-Woke me up each morning for seminary and made me french toast or something else yummy to eat in the car on the way there (since I obviously never woke up early enough to eat at home!)
-Tucked me into bed every night, up until I left for college I continued to enjoy this interaction to have her say goodnight and be able to talk about the day.
-Taught me good oral hygiene (being the dental hygienist that she is :) and I remember her coming to my class in 2nd grade to teach everyone the importance of nature's own toothbrush the apple, brushing teeth, and going to the dentist.
-She would ride her bike around neighborhood after neighborhood with me as I ran, getting in shape for field hockey double-day tryouts.
-Made every holiday special! Christmas is a production (Grant is still getting used to this :), we get a little something for Valentine's Day, all had matching cute Easter baskets, your birthday is your day, the milk and several other foods would magically turn green on St. Patrick's Day, we had elaborate picnics at the park waiting for the fireworks on 4th of July, etc. I think these are the kind of traditions I will carry on as a mother, and will keep me going on those hard days. For some reason knowing that my kids will be excited for the elves to fill the advent calendar each night in December, will keep me going when they're being terrible during the month of November :)

-Taught me to love shopping (my dad will disagree with the fact that this is a good thing, but I love it!) I remember an unhappy night in high school where she took me to the mall and we participated in some retail therapy, and guess what, it really worked. I know it was more the time spent with my mom than I enjoyed than the spending, but new things always help too :)And she knows me well enough to see my early stages of hunger and gets me food, which in turn makes the shopping much more enjoyable.
-Makes a mean chocolate chip cookie, which enticed my friends to come over.
-She came to countless sports events to support me, and drove to several away games.
Mom, thanks for all the great times! I look forward to every time I get to see you. I enjoy your long and short phone calls throughout the week, the fact that you have learned to text and picture message, and for all your love and encouragement.

Thanks Taryn for the wonderful remininse (sp?). I am so grateful to be your mom and have enjoyed being with you and your sisters as you have grown. You will make a great mom yourself one day and I hope to be the ultimate grandma. Love you lots. Mom

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading this post! What great memories and traditions. Now how about a chocolate chip cookie for your hungry, pregnant friend?
