The woes of home ownership.

Where are you landlord? My fridge is broken!
Two weeks ago, Grant went to eat some ice cream and realized it was melted, foamy, and really just gross overall. Being the sweets lover that he is, he strained out the peanut butter cups and ate them before throwing the ice cream down the sink. We realized something must be wrong, so the next day, we called around and found a place that would come check it out for a reasonable price and let us know what was wrong. I figured the problem would be fairly minor given the fact that our fridge is at most 3 years old, but bad news came from the repair man. The condenser had gone out, which is so expensive that they don't fix it, not even if you wanted to. Unsure of what may have caused this problem, I thought back to late last year when we had a lightening strike a tree next to our house, which blew out several appliances in our house including a TV, surround sound, computer, etc. We made a homeowners claim and got it all replaced, but the repair man said this could be damage from that strike, but there was no way to prove it. In retrospect, I think the fridge/freezer had been slowly getting warmer for awhile, but it was slow enough that we didn't realize it until the ice cream was melted. A few weeks earlier I bought some ice cream that we thought was weird and foamy, but it was a new brand and attributed it to that. Having already closed our homeowners claim, and not really knowing if that was the cause, we sucked it up and bought a new fridge.

We went to Sears and picked out a new one, fairly comparable to the one we had before, but maybe a little bit of an upgrade. We got it on a great deal at Sears where they have a next day delivery guarantee which would have worked great, except that this fridge was on back order. So, we got another discount and then waited a long 9 days without a freezer or fridge. Karrie, thank you for all the wonderful meals :)

Well, this is both Grant and my first ever fridge with water in the door, which we were both excited about, and Grant has already, after one day, learned a new favorite way to drink water...

  2. Tragic! But exciting that you have a fancy new water dispensing fridge. P.s.- I caught up on your blog tonight. Congrats on getting into Nursing school! That's awesome!

  3. Grandma Huntzinger's refrigerator condenser went out too. Her's is a Sears ( she swears by the service agreement... hint hint) this is her second condenser for that frig. Sorry for spreading bad news.

  4. Gotta love home ownership :). But water in the door is very cool-until your kids learn how to push the buttons.

  5. Cool fridge. Too bad you had to replace a fridge to get one with water on the front. I would really like that. I've been wishing ours would go out so we could get a new one. It just won't die. :(
