On our drive from Provo to Santa Barbara, on vacation this summer, I had an experience where I got to use my car maintenance knowledge. It is limited but comes in handy once in awhile. Holly's car was having issues with overheating but she got it "fixed" before we left and seemed to be doing great. So, we set out on our 10 hour journey, and about 30 miles out of Vegas it started seriously overheating and would not cool down. We had just finished our water bottles and got to use little boxes of water from the emergency essentials kit to fill up the reservoir to get us to Vegas. Here I am filling it up.
As I did this, it reminded me of all the other times I have been under the hood of a car...which in turn, led me to memories of Hawaii, as it was a fairly common occurrence there :) Don't get me wrong, our little LeMans was a sweet car, but it had it's fair share of problems (luckily we were able to fix most of them on our own!)
Here I am doing the exact thing in the above picture. Every time we would drive into town, we would overheat. This was the easiest problem to rectify...a little annoying but really not a big deal. We just kept a big bottle of water in the car at all time.
Along with several other problems, the gas gauge was broken. Amazingly we only ran out of gas once...and it was only a mile from a gas station. We had 5 people in the car (good for pushing). The only unfortunate thing was the fact I was wearing a white dress! haha.
Below is a picture of the biggest of our car problems of all. No, we are not changing the tire...we are picking it up off the side of the road after it fell off, yes FELL OFF, in a tunnel! This was followed by several events (which is story enough for several more posts). Lets just say our tow truck drivers did not speak English, we didn't have the $90 in cash that we needed, our mechanic was a drug dealer, and had murals painted all over his shop. It was an interesting experience to say the least.
And, my car skills do not conclude with these pictures. The linkage on this car had seriously issues (no, I don't know what that means, but I know that's what it's called and I learned how to fix it). It was a tricky little fix-it job so I felt cool when I was able to fix it.
Grant was loving that he is a car guru, as I called him several times asking about car problems (this was still his trying to win me over phase). It worked out good for both of us. Now, I just try to travel everywhere with him, so when in doubt, he can fix whatever problems we have!

Cute. Fun memories. Great to know what you can overcome.
ReplyDeletehahahahaha!!! Long live the LeMans! I was laughing when I read this. I had forgotten some of the details! Glad to know your linkage fixing skills came in handy again :)
ReplyDeleteTaryn, Taryn, Taryn...you have the craziest luck - good AND bad. The fact that I ran out of coffee filters this morning and thought the world was going to end (yes...at 4 a.m.) and comparing it to your vacation certainly makes my issue look trivial. Haha...tx for helping me keep it in perspective!! ;)
