Doctor Summer Camp

Grant had a C4 (combat casualty care course) that he was supposed to attend in January (when I planned my trip to North Carolina), but it was rescheduled for February, which ended up working out just fine. The weather in San Antonio (where his training occurred) was unseasonably warm for winter, which was nice since they were in the field for a few days and nights. In addition, I made a trip home since I hadn't been up there in awhile and might not get the chance to get to Davis again before we move this summer.

Grant had a really good time at training, we joked that it was summer camp for doctors. The first few days were mostly spent in class where they learned about mass casualty triage, etc. but they had time in the afternoons to watch movies and eat popcorn, hang out, etc. The first night; however, was quite "intense" (or would have been if it were real). After dark they had a drill which involved loud speakers which made it sound like they were being shot at, etc. they had to get into their chemical warfare gear (gas mask and all), etc. He had a friend who couldn't get the pants on his suit on (because the suspender straps were stuck between his legs), so amidst the chaos he was yelling, "Take your pants off!" For obvious reasons, that became a running joke for the week :)

All geared up!
He did have one familiar face...Jenny from his program went with him.
The first few days they just had classes and lived in rooms with 12 beds in each room. Grant had a top bunk (which they were not allowed to move against the wall) so he had to make sure he didn't roll off the bed! He said he would wake up in the EXACT same position he fell asleep in, guess subconsciously he knew not to move.
And, apparently doors are not necessary in the bathroom. Looks a lot like a beach bathroom (but luckily those even have doors most of the time!) There was also a row of toilets exactly like these, FACING this row...talk about AWKWARD!! (Grant said he was glad he packed a car magazine ;)
There are lots of things about the experience that I would not have enjoyed...luckily Grant and I are very different people in some ways. They had MREs for lunch and dinner everyday while they were there. Not sure I could have eaten some of these things....
He LOVED this beef and macaroni :)
I took this opportunity to fly home to Davis for a few days and hang out with my parents. Unfortunately I got a cold or really bad allergies, but it was still really fun and my mom and I got some good baby shopping and sewing done. Here are some of the fabrics I used for my quilt and blankets. I obviously love bikes and the ocean :)
And...here is the beginning of my herringbone pattern quilt for baby's bed! I love it so much. Using the underwater fabric (above) for the back of the quilt. Can't wait to see the finished product.
We reunited back in San Diego on Valentine's night and enjoyed some delicious thai takeout together at home as we unpacked and relaxed.

  1. ah those bathrooms are the worst!! I hope the girls had stalls for their bathroom. I think I go find a stump outside.

  2. Girls bathroom was the same as the boys! The few portapotties were used for that reason I'm sure.
