Great start to a 96

Grant is stationed with the Marines while we are in Okinawa, and the Marines definitely work hard, but they play hard too and we love that since it means that most (or all) normal 3-day weekends, are turned into 4-day weekends (they call it a 96) for us!
We decided to head over to Maeda Flats (we'd been there once before and loved it) for some snorkeling and beach time. Rowan woke up with a bit of a cold, but he seemed to be feeling just fine and he loves the ocean so it was the perfect activity for the day.
The walk down from where we parked.
We almost immediately headed out to the water. This spot was a lot deeper than where we snorkeled the first time and the water was actually a tad bit chilly (which is the first time I've felt that in Okinawa). It was still way warmer than California, but not warm bath water like I'm used to here :) Once I was it, it was totally warm and comfortable though (reminded me more of Hawaii water temp)

We just ordered Rowan a life jacket, so we tried it out today. He doesn't just have his eyes closed because it was bright...he actually fell asleep floating out in the water. I'd say he likes it ok :) Such a good little water baby!
He loves just lying there floating. Even in the bath, he will lay down in his little tub until only his face is poking out.
Grant and I took turns hanging out with Rowan while the other would swim around snorkeling. Grant got some more fun underwater shots.
Not pictured...he found an anemone with a bunch of clown fish, and when he dove down to look closer, the fish all came up to his mask to get a better look at him too. He found Nemo!
After a little while, Rowan and I went back to shore to hang out for awhile. Glad I didn't see any sharks in the ocean, but this was the cutest shark ever!
Used his pool floaty as a little bed. He didn't stay here long but it looked pretty comfy.
I'm excited for Rowan to be able to sit on his own because I know he'll love playing in the sand. A few days before this, we are at the beach and he rolled to the side of the blanket and put one hand in the sand and appeared to just LOVE how it was feeling. He wouldn't stop digging in the sand.
Deep in thought about the sand between his toes :)
Me and my favorite beach baby. There was an abundance of sea glass, so we had fun walking and collecting that along with a few fun shells.
I needed somewhere to put him while we were cleaning up for a minute, so the beach bin seemed like the perfect place ;) He liked it for a minute but wasn't a fan for long.
And one of my favorite things about this kid at the beach is his amazing ability to fall asleep. Love snuggling with this sandy little guy while at these gorgeous locations! I could sit like this for hours.
On the ride home, he was just being super chill (which is not characteristic of him in his car seat) and I could tell he just wasn't feeling great. I couldn't get over these amazing huge eyes though...so cute.
Love living where we are surrounded by beautiful beaches. It requires a little more effort than last year now that we have a baby and usually drive to the beach, but it's so worth it.

  1. Rowan is a real beach baby, it's in his blood, I think. You guys might have to eventually settle down by the ocean, so sad. Lol :)
