A foggy day at Birch Aquarium

Grant's clinic is awesome at giving them well deserved days off, so last week he had a random Thursday off and we decided to take advantage and do something new. Rowan has been asking to go to the aquarium for awhile now. We did a lot of aquarium trips in Oki, but have only been to the zoo and Safari park here, so we decided to check it out. February is also half price museum month, so we decided that made it an even better idea. I have to admit, the full price is a little steep in my opinion, but the discounted rate was definitely reasonable.
In comparison to Oki (the 3rd largest aquarium in the world), this one seemed tiny, but when you have small kids, that's not always a bad thing. Rowan was excited from the start and wanted to take a picture with this fish at the entrance ;)
SHARKS!
Checking out the awesome crabs
The tropical tank (more of what we're used to!)
I have to admit I was hugely disappointed by the fog. It was a gorgeous sunny day at our house, but as we drove within a mile of the coast, it was almost like we disappeared into the clouds. One of the things I was most excited about the aquarium was the view (picture the beach and Scripps pier just past this glass wall!) Oh well, it was half price and we still had fun :)
The tide pools were fun, got to touch sea cucumbers, urchins and enenemies (which Rowan was a little hesitant about but then ended up loving them!-who wouldn't they're so much fun to touch).
There was a fun kids outdoor area here. This seesaw made water shoot out of the contraption next to it (as did a little bike and a few other things you could do to manually power it). There was also a really fun water table where you could move walls around and send boats down the current.
We followed this with some fish tacos at Rubios in La Jolla with a view of the temple and then came home for naps. Perfect little morning getaway!
